Six days … of knowledge

Background (Context)
Our journey with Jesus to here ((Who do you say that I am?)
Deny yourselves, be humble, be serving ...
Mark 8:31–32 CSB
31 Then he began to teach them that it was necessary for the Son of Man to suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be killed, and rise after three days. 32 He spoke openly about this. Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.
Peter is not happy!
But now, Peter will become a witness to the greatest spectacle a personcould ever hope for:
The transfiguration!
(Metamorphises!)
May God help me now to show you what Mark reports happened that day!
Mark 9:3 CSB
3 and his clothes became dazzling—extremely white as no launderer on earth could whiten them.
Psalm 51:7 CSB
7 Purify me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
His face shone!
Matthew 17:1–2 CSB
1 After six days Jesus took Peter, James, and his brother John and led them up on a high mountain by themselves. 2 He was transfigured in front of them, and his face shone like the sun; his clothes became as white as the light.
His face shone like the sun!
Where do we come accross this “shining” in the Bible?
BUT NOW: A shining from within!
Mark 9:3 CSB
3 and his clothes became dazzling—extremely white as no launderer on earth could whiten them.
Moses, Elijah appear … as a welcoming committee!
They of knoweldge, come to herald the moment!
The promised land has been inaugurated!
Jesus, the Messia, is here, to lead His people into the TRUE promised land!
(Remeber Moses, who would not see the promised land in his earthly lifetime?)
Mark 9:5–6 CSB
5 Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it’s good for us to be here. Let’s set up three shelters: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah”— 6 because he did not know what to say, since they were terrified.
Peter: - This is too good. Let’s stay here!
To rest in the presence of Jesus is o so good, B&S!
But the race is not yet run, for us here this morning!
O, to have been there that day when Jesus was transfigured!
Mark 9:7 CSB
7 A cloud appeared, overshadowing them, and a voice came from the cloud: “This is my beloved Son; listen to him!”
But, the journey is not over yet!
(Remeber, we are on our way to Jerusalem!, with Jesus!)
Mark 9:8–9 CSB
8 Suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus. 9 As they were coming down the mountain, he ordered them to tell no one what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead.
Jesus knows He can not stay there on the mountain!
He had to go down that mountain one last time!
He would have to go down ...
(It was decreed, discussed by the Holy Trin ity, somewhere in all Eternity, that the journey did not end here on the mountain …)
Sop they go down ...
so that he could climb up one last hill a few days later!
… for the sake of those who would come to Him for rest!
Like Peter; like the disciples, when they would finally see him raised on the Cross - and it all made sense!
Mark 8:31 CSB
31 Then he began to teach them that it was necessary for the Son of Man to suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be killed, and rise after three days.
And that, loved ones, is what we commemorated last Sunday!
May the memory of last Sunday still be upfront in your mind, in your heart ...
and may the picture of the transfiguration be burned into your memories for as long as you live!
For we will see it again!
Jesus, His face shinin as bright as the Sun
His clothes whiter that any snow!
Present, on the throne!
In awe!
Philippians 2:10–11 CSB
10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow— in heaven and on earth and under the earth— 11 and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Come, brothers and sisters, let us go down tge mountain … into the world ...
The journey is not over
But we can be assured
Jesus - is the Son of God, The Messiah
and he rules forever!
Amen!
